The Story Behind the Trainings
Co-authors Laurie Ellis-Young and George T. Ellis PsyD crafted their book, "Breath Is Life: TAKING IN and LETTING GO," while living in Ukraine from 2016-2021. Dr. Ellis worked with the OSCE to establish a mental health program for peace monitors across Ukraine.
After the invasion their support continued through fundrainsing trainings in Cyprus, online, and Western Ukraine. Ukrainian Psychologist Natalie Verzun wrote,
“I am very grateful to my American colleagues for their unique training that is so desperately needed for Ukrainian professionals right now. The deep dive into neuropsychology with Dr. Ellis and learning stress-reducing breathing techniques from inspirational breath pioneers was beyond my expectations.” Their mission continues, and ongoing donations are welcome to further their efforts.

TESTIMONIAL FROM IRYNA PETRUS,
Program Manager, Ukrainan/American Center, Minneapolis MN
"Becoming a refugee is not just about crossing a border. It is about losing the ground beneath your feet — your safety, your certainty, your sense of belonging. It is waking up in a new country with a broken heart, trying to hold yourself together while holding your child’s hand, pretending you are strong enough for both of you.
When the war forced us to leave Ukraine, I arrived not only with a suitcase, but with deep fear, overwhelming grief, and questions that had no answers. I was a mother trying to stay calm for her daughter, while silently breaking inside. In those early days, more than anything, I needed someone to hold my hand — not just physically, but emotionally and spiritually — to help me believe that I could make it through, that I would not only survive, but one day, perhaps, thrive.
BreathLogic became that hand.
Through BreathLogic Literacy, I learned how to navigate the emotional storm inside me. Their techniques taught me how to manage stress, how to release grief, how to transform panic into peace, and fear into focus. They helped me return to myself — not just as a refugee, but as a mother, a woman, a human being capable of healing. What I learned didn’t just change me — it changed everything around me. I began to regulate my emotions, and with that, my daughter’s emotional world began to settle too. Because the emotional well-being of a child is deeply tied to the calmness of their parent. BreathLogic helped me create that calm. And through me, that peace began to reach other children and families who had fled from the same horrors, who were still searching for the ground beneath their feet. BreathLogic’s gift was not only emotional; it was profoundly practical. When I found my breath again, I found my power. I was able to be productive at work, supportive to my daughter, and present to my community. I was able to contribute — not just to exist, but to rebuild. To succeed. Without being asked, BreathLogic stepped in during the darkest chapter of my life and lit a path toward healing. I am deeply, soulfully grateful for the wisdom, care, and emotional lifeline they offered — not just to me, but to every heart that beats a little steadier because someone taught them how to breathe again."
TESTIMONIAL FROM VIKTORIIA LISOVSKA,
leader, coordinator of the process work community, international psychological programs in Ukraine. Psychotherapist, crisis psychologist, trauma therapist, psychosomatic consultant, Reiki Ryoho Teacher Candidate.
"Breath has become not just a technique, but a language through which I meet people.
In my individual sessions, I now integrate conscious breathing practices much more deeply. After massive missile attacks in Ukraine, I began holding stabilizing support groups where breath becomes the first anchor — a way to return to the body, to the present moment, and to life itself.
I also facilitate groups for women and teenagers, where conscious breathing gently yet profoundly opens space for recovery, connection, and inner stillness. Recently, I cried tears of happiness. Participants started writing to me about how valuable my morning practices have become for them, how they weave these practices into their everyday lives, and how breath helps them stay grounded. Among the participants are male military psychologists who have begun using these practices with soldiers, witnessing how they support recovery after combat experiences. There are also military psychologists who apply these practices with soldiers in rehabilitation. It fills my heart with deep joy to know that I can help in this way — and even more so to know that this knowledge continues to live on, spread, and breathe through other people.”
